Pet Insurance UK: Cover Levels Explained Before You Buy

Updated October 2026

UK pet insurance comes in four broad types. Accident-only is cheapest but excludes illness. Time-limited cover pays up to a set amount per condition for 12 months. Maximum benefit pays up to a limit per condition, not tied to time. Lifetime cover renews each year with a per-condition limit that resets, and is usually the most comprehensive and most expensive.

Check the excess, which can be a fixed amount, a percentage of each claim, or both. Older pets often carry higher percentage co-payments, so look at how the policy changes as your pet ages.

Pre-existing conditions are normally excluded, so insuring a young, healthy animal early generally gives the widest protection. Read how the policy defines a pre-existing condition and whether bilateral conditions are treated as one.

Compare the vet fee limit and whether the insurer pays the vet directly. Premiums rise with age and breed, so re-quote at every renewal rather than auto-renewing.
