Cheap Home Insurance UK: Buildings vs Contents Explained
Updated October 2026
Buildings insurance covers the structure of your home — walls, roof, windows, fitted kitchens — and is usually required by your mortgage lender. Contents insurance covers what's inside: furniture, electronics, clothing, valuables.
If you rent, you only need contents cover. If you own outright with no mortgage, buildings cover is optional but strongly recommended given rebuild costs.
The most common overpayment is insuring contents for far more than they're actually worth. Do a rough inventory walk-through room by room before you get quotes — most people overestimate contents value by 20–40%.
Bundling buildings and contents with the same insurer is usually (but not always) cheaper than two separate policies — always compare both ways.
